Since the launch of JioPhone by Reliance Jio in India, other telecom operators also started rolling out 4G phones at a very low effective price. But the difference between 4G phones launched by Airtel and Vodafone, and JioPhone is that first two are Android-based smartphones with the support of all apps in the Google Play store but the latter is just a feature phone. The JioPhone is the fastest growing phone services company globally. It has now stopped production of JioPhones and is in talks to bring out an Android-based phone.
The JioPhone runs currently on a version of FirefoxOS, KaiOS that comes with limitations of apps. A company insider told the FactorDaily, “There are not enough apps compatible with KaiOS but people are working on developing special versions for the JioPhone”. The FactorDaily had earlier reported that the Jio is in talks to bring out Facebook, YouTube and WhatsApp applications compatible smartphones.
However, the cost of Android-based JioPhone is not clear at this moment along with the tariffs that will apply for the new phone. and it is not clear yet if the same tariffs will apply for the new android phone. But we can assume that it is going to be an affordable one.
The report further suggests that negotiations are on between Jio and Google to bring down royalty for Android OS. The company earlier claimed that six million units were pre-booked after Rs 1,500-phone was announced back in August. A Jio spokesperson earlier claimed that the company will soon announce the next JioPhone booking date. A sudden decrease in prices of the 4G phones has been the witnessed since the launch of the announcement of JioPhone. With Jio reported to come up with an Android phone, it is for us to wait for a watch how prices of Android phones fall after the launch of this phone.
Sources did not clear that the Jio will discontinue the present phone, deliveries of which started around Durga Puja recently. However, other reports claim that Jio is reportedly considering manufacturing the KaiOS- based phone for at least a total of 10 million customers.
