Ever since Apple removed the TouchID from its anniversary special smartphone, the iPhone X, replacing fingerprint sensor with facial recognition has become the next big thing. Recently launched flagship smartphone from OnePlus, the OnePlus 5T also features facial recognition sensor. However, the phone comes with the fingerprint sensor as well which is located at the back of the phone below the camera module. Now, the company is soon to roll out facial recognition unlock update for the OnePlus 5.

OnePlus 5

The OnePlus 5T has been launched recently while the original OnePlus 5 was launched five months prior to the recent flagship smartphone. The news may be disappointing to the OnePlus 5 users but Carl Pei, Co-founder, OnePlus has officially announced that the OnePlus 5 will be receiving a Face Unlock update soon.

The tweet read, “Due to popular demand, Face Unlock is coming for the OnePlus 5. Thanks for the feedback, and merry Christmas.”

However, no other information of when can we expect the update has not been provided by Pei in any follow-up tweet. It is speculated that the update will be rolled out in next few weeks.

Face ID

The facial unlocking feature may not be as secure as on the Apple iPhone X, but we do appreciate the efforts company is doing to its customers.

A forum post from OnePlus named “Face Unlock: A deep dive” shared deep thoughts by the company on facial recognition.

OnePlus also rolled out the Android Oreo update for the OnePlus 5 just yesterday while the update is still due for the recently launched OnePlus 5T.
