After so many leaks and rumors, Xiaomi has finally unveiled the Mi Mix 2 along with Mi Note 3 in the global market in an event in China, ahead of iPhone’s launch on September 12. The device features a bezel-less design, similar to its predecessor Mi Mix, which was launched as a limited edition device by the Chinese manufacturer and was sold only in China. The Mi Mix 2 comes with a price tag of CNY 3299, CNY 3599 and CNY 3999 for three different memory varaints. There is also a limited edition device of Mi Mix 2 that features 8GB of RAM and ceramic unibody.
The device features a 5.99-inch bezel-less display, or what Xiaomi calls it Full-screen Display 2.0, company’s second iteration to the bezel-less display. The AMOLED panel has been manufactured by Samsung with the resolution of 2960×1440 pixels. The phone also has the highest screen to body ratio in any smartphone. The Mi Mix 2 will run on Android Nougat out of the box with Xiaomi’s latest custom Android skin MIUI9. The screen houses hidden speaker and ultra-sonic proximity sensor.
The Mi Mix 2 has been powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC, instead of the rumoured Snapdragon 836. The Qualcomm recently pushed aside the rumours of Snapdragon 836 chipset making its way on the device on the social media platform Weibo. The device comes in three RAM variants and memory variants – 6GB RAM/128GB internal storage, 6GB RAM/128GB internal storage and 6GB RAM/256 internal storage.
There is also a special edition of the Mi Mix 2 smartphone that features ceramic unibody and 8GB of RAM. The special edition device comes in White and Grey. The Mi Mix 2 houses 7-series aluminum allow frame with new antenna technology. The device houses Global LTE networks with 6 modes and 43 bands.
In terms of optics, Mi Mix 2 includes a 12 MP Sony IMX386 camera sensor on the back alongside a dual-LED flash and comes with 4-axis optical image stabilizer (OIS). The camera is capable of recording 4K videos at 30fps and 720p videos at 120fps. There is also a 18K gold plated decorative camera rim. The finger print sensor lies just below the rear camera. There is a 5MP front selfie shooter also that is located on the chin on the right side of the phone. The front camera is capable of 1080p videos. To provide juice to the device, there is a li-ion battery with a capacity of 3400mAh battery.
The three variants of the device are priced at CNY 3299 (roughly Rs 32,500), CNY 3599 (roughly Rs 35,300) and CNY 3999 (roughly Rs 40,000). While the limited edition device is priced at CNY 4299 (roughly Rs 42,000).
Talking about the second launch by the Chinese OEM, the Mi Note 3 comes with an aluminum alloy frame and four sided curved screen design. The all-glass rear panel is curved on all sides making the phone feel comfortable in hand. The Mi Note 3 features a 5.5-inch curved AMOLED display. The camera consists of dual 12MP camera setup with a wide angle lens and a telephoto lens. The camera comes with 4-axis optical image stabilization feature for capturing clearer picture during hand-held photography. The dual camera setup allows 2x optical zoom and also allows users to capture professional-like photographs with portrait and bokeh mode. There is a 16MP front selfie shooter with autofocus and Adaptable AI Beautify feature. The device comes with LTE, Bluetooth 5.0 and USB Type-C support. The device is splash resistant and sports dual-SIM card slot.
The device is powered by Snapdragon 660 processor coupled with 6GB of RAM. It runs on Android Nougat out of the box atop MIUI9. The device also features a 3D Facial recognition technology, similar to what is expected from the upcoming iPhone. The fingerprint sensor lies on the front just below the screen. The device has been made available in two non-expandable internal memory variant – 64GB and 128GB. Two colour variants of the smartphone – Black and Blue – have been confirmed for now. The device will cost CNY 2499 (roughly Rs 25,000) for 64GB internal memory variant, CNY 2899 (roughly Rs 28,500) for 128GB (Black) variant and CNY 2999 (roughly Rs 29,500) for 128GB (Blue) variant.
The Mi Mix 2 is a mid-range smartphone by the Chinese manufacturer and will compete directly to the recently launched Galaxy Note 8, LG G6. The device is launched a day ahead of the scheduled launch of iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and the anniversary Edition iPhone X.
