A lot of you would know Andy Rubin, but, for those who don’t, he is the co-founder of the Android operating system. According to the Essential official website which is Rubin’s child, the CEO and Founder knew something was going wrong with the state of current technology in our lives. That’s on a global scale. Which is why he started off with the Essential, a company which claims to bring in a benchmark in how smartphones are and what they can be. Unveiled on 30th May, 2017, the Essential Phone brings a host of delicacies to the table with its almost bezel-less design without compromising on structural rigidity. Yes, it would make the smartphone pretty expensive, but, the exquisite design of the Essential Phone would make it an absolute stunner when launched.
The phone is available for pre-order through the official website and it has a number of yardstick features as well. But, before we get to them, the question of ‘Will it come to India?’ begs to be answered.
India is one of the fastest evolving markets on this side of the globe. Without doubt, the Essential Phone would be available in India, however, an official confirmation from the company is yet to be made. That said, once here, this flagship smartphone would compete with the likes to the upcoming Apple iPhone 8 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.

25 days agoYou may be wondering why compare the Essential Phone to a fairly large Note 8 which is technically a phablet. The fact of the matter remains that this benchmark phone would have the largest screen-to-body ratio. Essential have redefined the term bezel-less in a completely new fashion without compromising on aesthetics. The 5.71 inch screen sits perfectly in the Titanium chassis in order not to compromise on build quality. The chassis has been tested for numerous drops and according to claims, can survive without any hassle.
And there is not just one, but, a number of party tricks up the Essential Phone’s sleeve. The first one being that it will run on Android with an ‘unlocked bootloader’. This would give developers a chance to customise the software according to their needs. The second part is the Essential camera accessory.
Not only is it the smallest additional camera, it can capture photos in 360-degree, probably the smallest 360-degree camera as well as it can easily be slipped into your pocket. Along with this, one of the units of the rear dual camera setup is a monochrome sensor, bringing in the proper nostalgic feel one would need from black-and-white photo.
In addition to the dual RGB 13MP rear camera which has an aperture of f/1.85, there is a front facing 8MP camera with f/2.2 aperture. And unlike some other phones with a bezel-less design which have the front facing camera at the chin of the phone, the Essential Phone or Essential PH-1 has it in the top centre. Videos can be captured in 4K at both ends.
The Essential Phone is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 processor with 4GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. The battery is a 3,040mAh unit available with fast charging through a USB Type-C cable. So, when it comes to performance, the Essential Phone would be competitive in all aspects.
What the purpose of the Essential Phone is bring about a change in the way we look at technology. Smartphones have been for quite some time seen as a limitation or compromise in one or the other aspect in order to keep costs in check. However, with the Essential Phone that may not be the case as it packs in performance with sheer styling.
In a highly evolving as well as a price sensitive market like India, the Essential Phone would undoubtedly do well. However, with most buyers having a ‘more-for-less’ approach, the Essential Phone would have be priced right! Through the pre-order, the Essential Phone is available for $699 which comes to around Rs 45,000 without taxes or duties. Considering this price, it would pose as a pretty stubborn competitor in the flagship smartphone space.
